Discovery of the upper kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillation from the X-ray transient Aql X-1

چکیده
We report on a comprehensive analysis of the kilohertz (≥600 Hz) quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) detected from the neutron star X-ray transient Aquila X-1 (Aql X-1) with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer, between 1997 and 2007. Among kHz QPO sources, Aql X-1 is peculiar because so far only 1-kHz QPO has been reported, whereas in most sources, 2-kHz QPOs are usually detected (a lower and an upper kHz QPO). The identification of the QPOs reported so far has therefore been ambiguous, although it has been proposed that they were likely to be the lower QPO. Following up on previous work, we confirm the identification of the QPOs previously reported as lower QPOs, because of their high-quality factors and the quality factor versus frequency dependency, which are similar to those observed in other sources. Combining all segments of data containing a lower QPO, we detect for the first time an upper kHz QPO. As in other sources for which the neutron star spin frequency is larger than 400 Hz (550.25 Hz in Aql X-1), the frequency difference between the 2-kHz QPOs is close to half the spin frequency. Based on this result, we re-examine the link between the neutron star spin and the frequency of the kHz QPOs to show that a model in which the separation of the lower and the upper QPOs relates to the neutron star spin frequency is still as good as any comparably simple model.

متن کاملThe Amplitude of the Kilohertz Quasi-periodic Oscillations in 4u 1728–34, 4u 1608–52, and Aql X-1, as a Function of X-ray Intensity
We study the kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) in the low-mass X-ray binaries 4U 1728–34, 4U 1608–52, and Aql X-1. Each source traces out a set of nearly parallel tracks in a frequency vs. X-ray count rate diagram. We find that between two of these tracks, for similar QPO frequency, the 2 − 60 keV source count rate can differ by up to a factor of ∼ 4, whereas at the same time the...
متن کاملMeasuring Neutron Star Mass and Radius with Three Mass-Radius Relations
We propose to determine the mass and the radius of a neutron star (NS) using three measurable mass-radius relationships, namely the “apparent” radius inferred from neutron star thermal emission, the gravitational redshift inferred from the absorption lines, as well as the averaged stellar mass density inferred from the orbital Keplerian frequency derived from the kilohertz quasi periodic oscill...
متن کاملDetection of a 1258 Hz high – amplitude kilohertz quasi – periodic oscillation in the ultra - compact X – ray binary 1 A 1246 – 588
We have observed the ultra-compact low–mass X–ray binary (LMXB) 1A 1246–588 with the Rossi X–ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). In this manuscript we report the discovery of a kilohertz quasi–periodic oscillation (QPO) in 1A 1246–588. The kilohertz QPO was only detected when the source was in a soft high–flux state reminiscent of the lower banana branch in atoll sources. Only one kilohertz QPO peak is...
متن کاملLag of Low-Energy Photons in an X-ray Burst Oscillation: Doppler Delays
Numerous X-ray bursts show strong oscillations in their flux at several hundred Hz as revealed by RXTE. Analyzing one such oscillation from the X-ray binary Aql X-1, I find that low energy photons (3.5–5.7 keV) lag high energy photons (> 5.7 keV) by approximately 1 radian. The oscillations are thought to be produced by hot spots on the spinning neutron star. The lags can then be explained by a ...
